The thrilling ride through the valley of waterfalls begins on the 14.4 km long Malta High Mountain Road by the impressive Malta Watergames.
The boldly designed route leads through tunnels hewn out of rock and along a number of hairpin bends to the Kölnbrein dam wall at 1,902 m above sea level. Coaches up to 14 m in length and 3.85 m in height can use the road just like any other car.
The toll point features a number of thrilling points for you to stop off and enjoy the views. Parking spaces for cars, buses and coaches are located right next to the Kölnbrein dam wall.
Kölnbrein dam wall
The Kölnbrein dam wall spans the sides of the mountain with great elegance. Austria’s highest, double-curved arch dam has enormous dimensions with a height of 200 m, length of 626 m and maximum width of 41 m.
Adventure Centre
Don’t miss three spectacular exhibitions in the Adventure Centre at the Malta mountain restaurant & hotel:
The Verbund exhibition explains how electricity is obtained from hydraulic power in the mountains; the Tauern Treasure Chamber presents the finest crystals of the Eastern Alps and another new exhibition displays "water rock art" - fascinating natural works of art that have been shaped by water. Admission is free!
Guided tours of the dam wall
Frequent guided tours of the interior workings of the dam wall use multimedia resources to explain how the "white gold" of electricity is generated from water. Information is available from the meeting point at the kiosk by the car park.
